In October of 2021, Mark Zuckerberg laid out a vision for his metaverse strategy. In his comments, he made it sound like the metaverse was just around the corner. He had already had success with Meta’s Quest headset and was ready to introduce VR and its potential to the global marketplace.
Nearly two years later, Mr. Zuckerberg still believes strongly about the future of the metaverse, however, he has recently pivoted to a more dedicated focus on AI currently and streamlining his business for more short-term profitability.
A recent WSJ column entitled “The Metaverse is Quickly Turning into the Meh-taverse“ emphasized the current disconnect of a metaverse happening anytime soon. Indeed, if you follow tech, you know AI is now at the center of most of the tech world’s activity.
However, as this WSJ article points out, “Mr. Zuckerberg isn’t walking away from the metaverse, signaling that it remains a long-term focus for the company after AI. The two major technological waves driving our road map are AI today and, over the longer term, the metaverse,” he said last month. “
